Extra, Extra is the title of my thesis from my MFA at Boston University. Abstract: Designing with purpose. It is okay for x to be only x without being x, y, and z. Something I look for in design is whether or not it makes sense. It is easy to get wrapped up in trying to rationalize things that are both unnecessary and distracting. Through thought, I choose what belongs in my design, feeling is how I relate to it, and meaning is what I prioritize.

As someone who is very easily distracted, it is notable that my works remain focused. In trying to explore alternative ideas for my thesis, I ended up confused, creatively stifled, and confined to the idea that what I wanted to write about was not worthy of exploration. Unsurprisingly, following these same ideas in an effort to create new work would leave me feeling the same. Ironically, at one point in time, I feared my thesis topic would be too egocentric. Now, I am excited to have a thesis that explores the relationship between my design practices and sensibility. I will continue to make and I will continue to make it make sense. Essay: Hidden inside a black envelope on a black page, readers might have to do a double-take to find the essay lurking in the book. That, or they could just look at the glossary before reading. The essay is modeled after a newspaper. This is to play on the whole “Extra, Extra, read all about it!” idea.

Presentation: To present this final work, I held a press conference. During the press conference, I projected videos of independent publicists (my family) asking questions about my academic career and experience creating the book. In person, I answered these questions aloud so it was actually a dialogue. This style of outward thinking was well-recieved and apparently a first as far as presentation styles go.

My AR journey started with me researching different programs and apps to see which felt like the best fit. After deciding to go with Aero, I spent the next few hours looking at projects on Behance. This was the major source of my inspiration. Having felt a bit stumped before checking out some examples, seeing what could be done with the app helped me think about what I could create to relate to my topic, Euphoria. This project was a bit different than others in terms of range. I was only as capable as the time I put in learning the program, and YouTubing how to do x or y.
In illustrator, I constructed various scenes in a painstakingly slow way that overheated my computer for hours on end. Then, I transferred the illustrations into Aero and carefully placed them.
I discovered some notes I made while making this project and the one that stuck out to me most: My biggest piece of advice for myself: design in a way that makes sense to your audience, but also to YOU.

For the book of books, I noted both the similarities and differences between five books of my choosing. I knew from the start that I wanted to make this book exaggerated in some way. After all, I was creating a book meant to compare a series of other books. To account for the irony in this, I unsurprisingly decided to create more irony. I made a book where each page was the size of a sheet of newspaper. This project remains high on my list as it looks good, can be interacted with in a unique way, and shows my tone of voice. Five stars for you, book of books.

This project was important to deepen my relationship with design and honestly even my relationship with myself. At first, I was stumped figuring out ways to combine my newly found interest in basic html with my enjoyment of gifting people things I’ve made using various creative resources. I have a love of photography so, naturally, it was recommended I look into photo glitching which is essentially the process of disrupting an image. I hadn’t known that you could glitch a photo yourself by editing the image’s data. After looking to my trusted pal, Google, for tips and tricks, I found out you could access the image data via opening the jpeg as a .txt file. Doing so displayed pages of code, as seen on the top left of the opposite page. I started playing around with the code by first deleting random letters and words which admittedly took a bit because you have to save each version to see if you have corrupted the file to the point of it not being readable by the computer. I got to a point where I was bored of copying and pasting earlier lines of code elsewhere in the image and I decided to try adding my own text.

This is when the idea popped into my head that I could write personal notes to people within the image code. Because most people would never think to read an image as a text file, I knew I had an opportunity to play around with privacy and this allowed me to get personal. I decided I would add code to the images intentionally and thus added what I wanted to tell the person in said image at random places throughout the code. I like how it remains up to me to share the hidden secret/message with the person. I find it amazing that different words or characters will produce a different effect. This project made me feel proud of my ability to connect different creative parts of myself in a way that was unique to me. I also enjoy that whenever my friend sees it, she proudly points out that it’s her (@Lauren).

In order to keep a record of my projects to date, I made an inventory book. I like inserts as it creates more of a dynamic book than just your typical turn the page style. I also decided to use the bigger pages as a home for the images I wanted to show. The smaller yellow inserts house the captions and descriptions. I think it is a good practice to be able to explain and talk about your work, but I also think your work should be able to stand alone too. By creating two separate books, someone could choose to just read the descriptions or just look at the pictures. The world is your oyster.

The zine project was definitely more experimental than what I am used to. In order to make my project accessible for both viewing and recreating, I sourced content from everyday items like newspapers and magazines. I also wrote poems, copy and pasted memes, and made a tiny zine scrapbook of my dog and his friends (very cute, right?). Next, I printed the zines on colorful paper and put them each in plastic sheets so the viewer felt like opening the zine was special and the experience was unique to them.

One of the most important parts of this project is the explanation behind it. Zines are an accessible way to design because you can do it cheaply and you are able to mass- produce the design thanks to modern copiers. In making the zines, I thought about how it would be nice to create a program or show schools how students can make them. It is a nice way to encourage freedom of expression. These teeny tiny zines were fun to work on, but I think I am more typically into things that read like a true magazine. Still good to try different things, though!

My appreciation for good advertising and design skyrocketed the moment I saw the OK Cupid, DTF campaign. These whimsically beautifully orchestrated photos paired wonderfully with a pun or sort of inside joke for people engaging with the ads by reading them. If you did not want to read however, the images could stand alone as an entirely different entity because they were stunning. I chuckled to myself as I scanned the subway car for more content. I thought it was so cool that a seemingly ordinary dating company rolled out ads that were youthful and promiscuous if you will. I felt as though it was one of the first times I had seen an ad of this nature. I was amazed and humbled by this ingenious idea. The term DTF was re-branded into something fun, relatable, and cute. It did not just mean down to ****, it now encapsulated so much more than that. This campaign reached new levels of intimacy.

I headed to the lovely interwebs to investigate the brains behind the operation and found out it was none other than the infamous W+K. It makes sense that a major design firm pulled this off but I will say part of my shock level came from the fact that an agency as big and well known as WK was taking such a fun stance on the typical hush hush nature of the term DTF. This is really the design that cemented my awareness that I belonged in the graphic design world.

To honor my love for this campaign, I made fifty iterations of one of the original posters using only components of said poster. Then, I turned my favorites into postcards. The idea behind the postcards is they would be sent to OK, Cupid members to give out after their dates with people they met through the app. This project is not for the faint of heart which is maybe why I enjoyed working on it so much. It sort of disrupted a system in its own way and I can stand behind that.

Tasked with coming up with fifty questions, I decided to ask an important question. Among the most pressing one, I also asked a few others. You have to look closely to find these, though as they are silkscreened in black ink on top of black paper. I design with purpose and this project contains components that follow this guideline. The discreetness of these questions, that were the base of this project, went against typical expectations for this body of work. I felt that the questions I had were not worth asking, and that I could better serve my audience by asking a question we all might be thinking from time to time, hence...

Here is a closer look at some of the complex text. Do you have an answer to my question? I will say that mostly everyone told me the book is “very me” so I will leave this there.
