Extra, Extra is the title of my thesis from my MFA at Boston University.
Abstract: Designing with purpose. It is okay for x to be only x without being x, y, and z. Something I look for in design is whether or not it makes sense. It is easy to get wrapped up in trying to rationalize things that are both unnecessary and distracting. Through thought, I choose what belongs in my design, feeling is how I relate to it, and meaning is what I prioritize.
As someone who is very easily distracted, it is notable that my works remain focused. In trying to explore alternative ideas for my thesis, I ended up confused, creatively stifled, and confined to the idea that what I wanted to write about was not worthy of exploration. Unsurprisingly, following these same ideas in an effort to create new work would leave me feeling the same. Ironically, at one point in time, I feared my thesis topic would be too egocentric. Now, I am excited to have a thesis that explores the relationship between my design practices and sensibility. I will continue to make and I will continue to make it make sense.
Essay: Hidden inside a black envelope on a black page, readers might have to do a double-take to find the essay lurking in the book. That, or they could just look at the glossary before reading. The essay is modeled after a newspaper. This is to play on the whole “Extra, Extra, read all about it!” idea.
Presentation: To present this final work, I held a press conference. During the press conference, I projected videos of independent publicists (my family) asking questions about my academic career and experience creating the book. In person, I answered these questions aloud so it was actually a dialogue. This style of outward thinking was well-recieved and apparently a first as far as presentation styles go.
